What is Intermodal Transportation

We're Here To Take Away Your Logistics Worries, so You Can Focus on Making Your Business GREAT.

Learn more about the characteristics of intermodal transportation and the opportunities it provides for your business.

Door-to-door 53' domestic intermodal transportation is an alternative method to ship truckload freight utilizing two different modes of transport, rail and truck.

With intermodal, dray motor carriers are used for the origin pick-up and destination delivery between the intermodal ramps.  The intermodal container is affixed to a chassis when moving over the road.  The long-haul segment of the intermodal freight move is done via the various North American railroads.

As eluded to above, the more prevalent intermodal service is delivered through the COFC intermodal model, as it provides additional savings over a TOFC service because the containers are double-stacked on the rail well car.

Depending on the service, equipment can be provided by the class I railroads, steamship lines, asset trucking companies, private parties or other third-party providers.

On average, a good intermodal lane will save shippers 10% to 15% off truckload lanes 700 miles or greater in length of haul.

InTek Freight and Logistics focuses on COFC 53’ door-to-door intermodal services, but also offers 40' and 45' intermodal service options for shippers.

Within North America we help shippers on their cross-border shipments within US, Canada and Mexico, as an alternative to truckload.
